Desktop Dining

This funny article that was originally published in the Sacramento Bee back in July (and republished in the Idaho Press Tribune today) is about the culture of eating at your desk. (Sorry - you have to register a username and password to access the story)

There is a particularly good part that talks about eating bacon at the office:

Linda Donato deserves another piece of pie for e-mailing the most succinct guideline for communal microwave use: "In my opinion, two things should not be cooked in the office microwave. Fish, because it smells too strong, and bacon, because it smells too good."

"The bacon just makes you salivate," she told us during a phone interview. Donato says that if you have the nerve to bring bacon, you should bring enough to share with everyone in the building.

That would be a lot of bacon. Donato, who is 53 and lives in Hollywood Park, works at the mammoth DMV complex near 24th Street and Broadway.

Amen, Linda. Amen.

You know you're a bacon addict when...

...friends have bacon for a meal or see something bacon-related in a store and immediately think of you!

Since I started this blog - heck, even before I started this blog - friends have sent me random emails about their encounters with bacon in various forms at breakfast, lunch and dinner. And occasionally friends will give me little bacon-related gifts when they come across something funny. Gifts have included bacon bandaids, gourmet bacon, books about bacon...and the most recent one was earlier this evening - bacon tape from my friend Shawn (which I've also covered in a previous post).

So yes, my name is Heather and I'm a baconaholic.

Bacon and pizza

Bacon is one of the most under-rated toppings when it comes to pizza. Most pizza restaurants offer some sort of bacon topping - whether it's regular bacon or Canadian bacon - but pepperoni or sausage usually get top billing.

So I decided to do some research on bacon-based pizzas. Below are several different concoctions I discovered.

Canadian Bacon with Pineapple: Always a crowd pleaser.

Bean & Bacon Pizza: Pizza with a southern accent.

Santa Fe Bacon Pizza: Pizza with a southwestern twist.

Sauerkraut and Bacon Pizza: Ja wohl???

Sausage and Canadian Bacon Pizza: Pizza from our friend, Mr. Pig.

Cheesy Bacon Pizza Pockets: A quick and easy snack.

Avocado, Blue Cheese and Bacon Pizza: Pizza, California-style.

Clam and Bacon Pizza: I guess they call that 'surf and sty'?

Mushroom Bacon Pizza

Bacon and Potato Pizza: Very Idaho.

Beef and Bacon Pizza: For meat lovers.

Chicken and Bacon Pizza: Cluck and muck.

BLT Pizza: Not so sure about mayo on pizza, but otherwise it sounds good!

Bacon Night on Conan

There were two funny bacon-related items on Conan O'Brien tonight.

The first one was during the skit "Late Night SAT Analogies" that went like this:

CBS is to...Number 1 network with 3 of the top 5 shows
as
NBC is to...Number 1 network with 3 of the 5 letters that you use to spell "bacon"

I guess that's kind of an insult to bacon, but funny (and true) nonetheless.

The second item came prior to Conan's interview with Sacha Cohen, aka "Ali G." Ali G recently conducted an interview with Pat Buchanan that went something like this:

Ali G: Does you think that Saddams ever was able to make these weapons of mass destruction, or as they is called, these BLTs?

Pat: Was Saddam able to make them?

Ali G: Could he make BLTs?

Pat: Yes, at one time he was using BLTs on Kurds in the north.

Ali G: Was it worth fighting a war over BLTs?

Pat: I don't think Saddam Hussein and Iraq were a threat to the United States even if they had WMDs or BLTs, as long as they weren't nuclear weapons.

You have to be familiar with Ali G to find the humor in this. But props to Conan for referencing bacon twice within 10 minutes!

In-flight bacon

There's a great post over at Bacontarian about a very important issue - lack of recognition of "Bacontarianism" as a special meal category on airlines.

From Bacontarian:
"This is my challenge: For the Bacontarian community to unite, and set forth to spread the good bacontarian diet to airlines around the world. I hereby pledge 500g of prime, organic, danish bacon to whoever is first to get a Bacontarian special meal delivered by an airline."

As someone who spends an average of 6+ hours on planes per week, this is definitely a cause I can rally around...

Bacon Blasphemy

Some jerk over at Cafe Press has decided to make bacon the symbol of obesity. That is NOT cool.

There is nothing funny about this crap.

Got a beef with beef bacon?

Of all the bacon imposters out there, "beef bacon" is one worth noting.

We all know that bacon comes from what Homer Simpson calls "a wonderful, magical animal." So where do people get off trying to make bacon out of a cow???

I recall eating beef bacon as a child - it's probably been at least 13 years since I last encountered it - but my dad reminded me of it the other day. For those of you who aren't familiar with beef bacon, it's basically just what it sounds like - beef, sliced like bacon, that is cured and smoked to imitate the flavor of bacon.

You ask...why would I eat beef bacon if all I really want is real bacon? It's not like real bacon is hard to find. But according to some people, beef bacon has up to half the fat of real bacon, thus making it a healthier product.

So I guess if you're an observant Jew or have such serious health issues that it's the only way you can experience the joy of bacon without consuming the real thing, then you've gotta do what you've gotta do. But we all know nothing can compare to the sweet, crispy, mouth-watering real thing.

Which leads me to the topics I'll explore in future posts...turkey bacon, kosher bacon and Canadian bacon.

If you still want to know more about "beef bacon," here's a link to a site that sells it. And here and here.

Blogging for Katrina Relief

Today I'm breaking my own rule that every post on this site has to have something to do with bacon.

The current situation on the Gulf Coast is heartbreaking. The fate of New Orleans is uncertain. Hundreds of thousands of people are without homes and many of them have no idea what the future holds for them.

Hundreds of blogs are getting together today to raise money for the relief effort. The organization I've donated to myself, and am asking any readers of this blog to donate to, is the American Red Cross (www.redcross.org).

For more information about what you can do to help, visit Instapundit.

Even the smallest donation can make a difference. Please support our bacon loving brothers and sisters in the South today!
