Pancetta Veneziana

I spent some time earlier today in Venice, Italy. As I was leaving, I decided to pick up some Italian delicacies at the airport to eat for dinner when I arrived in Brussels. And of course, two of the items were bacon related. There were actually quite a few options to choose from (God bless Italy), but I finally settled on the Prosciutto Crudo by Vismara and Speck di Asiago. What a great way to end a lovely day spent in a beautiful place such as Venice.

Ah, the things you stumble upon on MySpace.com...this clever individual has come up with an idea for a new soft drink called "Diet Coke with Bacon." Join the movement.

Baconvision: Little Less Bacon

I still don't understand why this woman didn't break up with her boyfriend after the first "I'm a vegan now" conversation...

Baconvision

It has been brought to my attention that there are a wealth of videos over at YouTube.com involving bacon. Some of them are lame, but some of them are pretty funny. So "Baconvision" will be a new regular feature here on Bacon Unwrapped as I stumble upon some of the better ones. Following is the first Baconvision feature - "Bacon Sandwich". Enjoy!

Bacon Street

A couple weeks ago, one of my friends at work sent me an email early in the morning before I got to the office. She was already there and wanted to tell me that I needed to get to the office as soon as possible because the entire street corner where our office is located smelled like bacon. I laughed it off thinking it could have been a number of things and maybe she just had bacon on the brain. But a couple days ago, I experienced it myself...I was riding to work in a taxi and the weather was beautiful outside so I had my window rolled down. And about 1/2 block from my office I was suddenly hit with the smell of bacon. It was true! Our street literally smelled like bacon! So to whichever restaurant that is causing this phenomenon...thank you.

Soft Shelled Crab BLT

Today I had a great variation of BLT for lunch. The Soft Shelled Crab BLT at The Greene House in Scottsdale is amazing if you ever find yourself in that neck of the woods.

Today's secret ingredient is...BACON!!!

Tonight was the bacon episode on Iron Chef America, pitting Bobby Flay against Susur Lee.

In honor of the event, I had bacon in every meal today. This morning I had a breakfast burrito (bacon, egg, cheese, tomato, olives and sour cream wrapped in a flour tortilla), for lunch I had a BLT, and for dinner I had spaghetti carbonara.

One of the judges for this episode of Iron Chef was comedian Mo Rocca, which made for some memorable quotes:

"When I was growing up in my house, we had a quota of four strips of bacon because of health concerns. So this is going to be the most delicious betrayal of my family to shovel down 10 plates of bacon."

"I agree that it is so moist and so delicious and with the maple syrup, what a wonderful tribute to Canada. You should totally feed this to Celine Dion. She would be obese within a month, it's so good." (referring to the Irish Bacon Wrapped Pork Tenderloin)

"In my dreams, there is a drive-thru window where I can pick one of these up every morning on the run. In a word, it's McDelectable." (referring to the Green Onion Pancake, Quail Egg and Caviar)

"Maybe my imagination is getting away from me, but I just feel like this food is so rich that I'm just gonna die. But it's a great way to go out." (referring to the Deconstructed Pancetta Carbonara)

"This is the 11th plate, I guess, of bacon we've had. And I just want you to know that if I don't make it out of kitchen stadium alive, I really like your Irish bacon." (referring to the Irish Bacon with Pineapple and Jalepeno Broth)

Here's a list of the dishes prepared by each chef:

FLAY

  • Shellfish and Bacon Tapas
  • Bacon Risotto with Quail Egg and Green Onion
  • Jerk Rubbed Whole Slab Bacon with Mango Sauce
  • Deconstructed Pancetta Carbonara
  • Irish Bacon with Pineapple and Jalepeno Broth

LEE

  • Irish Bacon Wrapped Pork Tenderloin
  • Lionhead with Potatoes and Spinach Sauce
  • Shanghai-style Pork with Cabbage, Polenta and Apples
  • Green Onion Pancake, Quail Egg and Caviar (this was my favorite)
  • Irish and American Bacon Scallop with Roasted Pineapple
  • Pork Tart with Quail

And the verdict was a rare tie, which makes perfect sense. Because when bacon is involved, no one is a loser.

Shag

Shag is one of my favorite artists. I own several of his pieces. But one I don't own is called "The Fruit Bowl" (shown here). This seems like one I should have in my collection. It's hard to find Shag pieces for sale, but the search is officially on.
