Following the Bacon Road
Move over Matt Lauer...I'm about to launch my own version of "Where in the World is Heather Lauer?"I've been somewhat M.I.A. from this blog over the last couple weeks, and it wasn't just out of laziness this time around. I'm actually in the process of leaving my job of 11+ years and moving from Washington, DC back to the Mountain Time Zone, so I've been a bit preoccupied with matters related to the departure process (and many, many, many "farewell" cocktails...my liver is about to stage a coup).
Going forward I'll be splitting my time between my motherland of Idaho and the But It's A Dry Heat Which Is A Load Of Crap But Winters Are Really Awesome desert of Arizona. I'm working on a couple big bacon-related projects that I'll talk about more on this blog over the coming months, but in the meantime I am using the next 2 weeks as I drive cross country to discover the Best of Bacon across America.
Starting this weekend, my journey will take me to Kentucky (home of 1000 smokehouses), Missouri (home of one of my favorite smokehouses), Iowa (home of a gazillion hogs), Minnesota (home of some other interesting bacon-related stuff), and then straight across the northern plains to Idaho. And I plan to share my journey with you here on Bacon Unwrapped as the adventure unfolds. On previous cross country drives, I've always had a "mascot" along for the ride. My travel companion this time around is going to be St. Anthony, Patron Saint of Bacon. He might have a few stories of his own to share from the road. And hopefully his saint-like skills will point us in the direction of the best bacon (it would be really awesome if he could also double as the Patron Saint of No Traffic Tickets).
So check back regularly over the next couple weeks and, as always, get your bacon on!

Hello from Canyon Couunty:
Heather, I was chatting with Dustin of Brick 29 about a possible focus on the chef in our Valley HomeSTYLE magazine (published in your hometown newspaper: Idaho Press-Tribune.)
He told me about your blog.

St. Louis area - visiting Swiss Meats just west of the city. I'll be in the state for less than 24 hours before heading up to Iowa - unfortunately I won't be making it to KC on this trip.
