Bacon Nation Unwrapped: Sunday Funnies

Recent news from the Bacon Nation...

  • Scott Kurtz of the webcomic PVP is having guest artists do strips for him while he recovers from illness. A recent guest strip involves a character who randomly gets attacked by a panda. In one of the strips, the character fashions a suit made of bacon to keep the vegetarian panda from attacking him. (Thanks to reader, Jason).
  • Duff Goldman, the Ace of Cakes, was recently featured in an article in USA Today. When asked what food he likes to travel with, his response was "I like to travel with food that's not too messy and not too greasy...(but) what I really wish I could travel with is bacon. If they invented a way to travel with hot fresh bacon, I would travel with that all the time. Unfortunately, bacon's something you have to have at home or in a diner or something." By the way, I think Duff needs to do a bacon-themed cake for his show on the Food Network...
  • Are you looking to pick up a new hobby? Consider becoming an expert bacon mat maker. This art form proves once again that bacon makes everything better, including art.

Recent news from the Bacon Nation...

  • Knowing how to say "bacon" in many languages, including sign language, is a good life skill.
  • There have been a bazillion references to the bacon bra in the blogosphere this week (which is one of the reasons I haven't written about it yet - the other reason being that it's just kinda gross, to be honest). But here's a link to the Flickr page with the full photo montage if you just haven't had enough of it yet.
  • The Shameless Carnivore has released a book.
  • Do you like skateboarding? Do you like bacon? Well then here you go.
  • Sometimes all you need is a tortilla and a few pieces of bacon to start the day.
  • A group of bacon connoisseurs is doing research to discover new and unique ways to consume bacon.

Bacon Nation Unwrapped: March Madness

Recent news from the Bacon Nation...

  • This week seems to be all about contests or events involving bacon. The biggest event of the week was the Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival in Des Moines, Iowa. Mr. Bacon Pants reported live from the event.
  • Yesterday there was a bacon eating contest at Atwood's Tavern in Boston.
  • It's time to do a monthly check-in to see how things are going with the 2008 Bacon Challenge. Not surprisingly, the field of serious competitors is starting to narrow.
  • Two new websites entered the world of bacon blogging recently. Check out Skulls and Bacon and Theories of Bacon. The more, the merrier!
  • On the recipe front, the most popular bacon recipe on the Interweb this past week was definitely Bacon Cups from Not Martha. I had several readers email me about this one!
  • A reader brought a recipe for Bacon and Marcona Almond Maple Syrup Brittle to my attention. There are so many good things about the title of this recipe that I don't know where to start with commentary, so I'll just let it speak for itself.
  • Here's a link to recipes for pork-based martinis: Chinese sweet dried pork martini, ground pork martini, Italian sausage martini, and Spam martini. I just threw up in my mouth a little bit.

  • Venison sausage made from bacon and a freshly killed mule deer sounds like a delicious winter treat.
  • The folks at Wooly Pigs are about to slaughter some of their 400 pound Berkshire hogs. Each hog produces about 100 pounds of high quality cured and smoked products (bacon, shoulder bacon, jowl bacon, ham, sausage, fatback, etc.) for around $600. Talk about a good deal!
  • It's freezing in DC today so I don't exactly have ice cream on my mind, but Bacon & Egg Ice Cream sounds pretty good anyways.

Bacon Nation Unwrapped: Thanksgiving Edition

OK, I'm back from a week-long hiatus that involved moving apartments in DC, amongst other things.

And now I give you Bacon Nation Unwrapped, Thanksgiving-style.

  • November is the time of year when hogs are traditionally slaughtered. The event causes some people to reflect on the relationship humans have with pigs as a food source. Sara Dickerman wrote an article for Slate last year on this issue that is worth revisiting. And now Heath Putnam, owner of Wooly Pigs in Spokane, WA, is giving us a glimpse into the process of taking his Mangalitsa hogs to market through a blog that chronicles his experience.
  • If you're debating whether or not to serve bacon at breakfast Thanksgiving morning, debate no more. Here's a flow chart to help you make your decision, and the final result is always the right answer (ie yes).
  • There is something about cheeseballs and the holidays (and this is not a reference to some of my weirder family members). But it seems like a cheeseball is always served at some point during the festivities. So liven up your cheeseball experience this year with some bacon.
  • Since Thanksgiving is all about feasts, read about Robyn's Pork-Fest at Momofuku in NYC over at The Girl Who Ate Everything.
  • And if you're still hungry after Thanksgiving dinner, have some pork skins for a snack. Not sure what kind of pork skins to buy? Learn from a bona fide pork skin connoisseur. (via The Carnivore Project)

Bacon Nation Unwrapped: Praline bacon, BLT pasta, bacon-flavored salt, and...whale bacon

I'm starting a new regular feature here on Bacon Unwrapped in which I will summarize some of the things the Bacon Nation is talking about in the blogosphere.

  • John at Walkin in New Orleans blogs about a diner called Elizabeth's that serves a praline bacon that is so good, it's like crack. "Food that good shouldn't be that cheap and be produced from one guy in a kitchen the size of a walk-in closet."

  • The author of Forest Street Kitchen makes a BLT pasta using bacon cheddar sausage from her local farmer's market.

  • This week's Bon Appetit Podcast (Episode 56) features Chef Wolfgang von Wieser from the Bellagio in Las Vegas. Chef von Wieser demonstrates how to make bacon-flavored salt.

  • Whale bacon?
