One Shining Carnivore Moment

I have to admit I’ve been a bit depressed for the last week due to Georgetown’s loss in the Final Four of the NCAA basketball tournament. But bacon’s victory as the Ultimate Meat has lifted my spirits once again. So in lieu of a victory speech, and in the spirit of the other “March Madness,” I’ve compiled this video tribute in honor of all the meats that participated in The Carnivore Project Meat Bracket. Because really, this contest was all about being a carnivore, and when it comes to meat there are no losers. So enjoy this “One Shining Moment” for all carnivores everywhere.

Jared, author of The Carnivore Project, has written an excellent article about the path bacon took on its way to the Ultimate Meat title. Click here to read.

Meat Armageddon: Bacon vs Roast Chicken

This entry is for the final round of the Meat Bracket being sponsored by The Carnivore Project. Over the last several weeks, bacon has gone head to head with other meats to determine which meat is the best. In the first round, bacon dominated hot dogs. In the second round, bacon destroyed steak. The third round was an intense competition with sausage from which bacon emerged victorious. In the semifinal, bacon easily beat sushi. Now bacon is up against roast chicken in the final battle for meat world domination. So please vote for bacon!

Final: Bacon vs Roast Chicken

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.

Bacon is arguably the most popular breakfast meat ever.

You simply just don't eat Roast Chicken for breakfast.

See any roast chicken here?

And if that isn't enough...does roast chicken get any better than when it is draped in bacon?

The choice is obvious. Vote.

March Madness Overload

I'm a huge college basketball fan (GO GEORGETOWN), so every year I look forward to the next couple weeks when I will spend a ridiculous amount of time parked on my couch flipping back and forth between multiple basketball games and obsessing over my brackets.

However, March Madness has taken on a whole new meaning for me this year as I have made it to the finals of The Carnivore Project Meat Bracket. This weekend, while my Hoyas start working towards their place in the Final Four, I will be preparing for my own championship match against Roast Chicken. Fortunately the many hours I plan to spend on my couch this weekend will give me ample time to prepare for the competition.

So check back next week to vote for bacon in the Meat Bracket. And cheer for the Hoyas this weekend! HOYA SAXA and GO BACON!

Meat Bracket Semi-Finals: Bacon vs Sushi

This entry is for Round 4 of the Meat Bracket being sponsored by The Carnivore Project. Bacon is going head to head with other meats to determine which meat is the best. In the first round, bacon dominated hot dogs. In the second round, bacon destroyed steak. The last round was an intense competition with sausage from which bacon emerged victorious. This week, bacon is up against sushi. Sushi??? Sushi isn't a meat - it's a genre! So please vote for bacon.

Yep, even sushi is better with bacon.

The Meat Bracket Division Final: Vote for Bacon!!!

This entry is for Round 3 of the Meat Bracket being sponsored by The Carnivore Project. Bacon is going head to head with other meats to determine which meat is the best. In the first round, bacon dominated hot dogs. In the last round, bacon destroyed steak. This week, bacon is up against sausages. So please vote for bacon!

Meat Bracket Division Final: Bacon vs Sausage

After a little pre-match scouting on my competitor's blog, it is clear that the bacon vs sausage match is actually gearing up to be a battle of the United States vs Europe.

While I've only scratched the surface, I feel that the 200+ posts I've done on this blog over the last 21 months do a respectable job of making the case for why Bacon Is The Best Meat Ever. And in my first and second round matches against hot dogs and steak, I made the argument that both of those meats can be improved when wrapped in bacon. So it would be redundant for me to write an entry about sausage being better when wrapped in bacon. It's just too obviously true. Therefore, I'm not going to bother. This entry is going to be about defending the honor of the United States and, correspondingly, bacon.

I've got nothing against Europeans. My pedigree is a solid mix of German and English blood. I love pancetta, Berner würstel, and choucroute garnie as much as any of my European brethren. But in defending bacon and, let's face it, liberty, I'm gonna wrap myself in red-white-and-blue and appeal to the good ol' American sense of patriotism with the hope of garnering enough votes to put bacon, and America, on top where they belong.

So if you're for grilling bacon cheeseburgers on the 4th of July, bacon egg and cheese biscuits from McDonald's, Boston baked beans and bacon, bacon bits on your Idaho baked potato, bacon wrapped steak from a New York City steakhouse, a pile of bacon stacked high from a Las Vegas buffet, Southern bacon and grits, bacon-wrapped Gulf Coast shrimp, and freedom, then vote for bacon.

If you're for leftover - and usually unidentifiable - bits and pieces stuffed into a synthetic casing, and you believe in the burden of the European social model, then give your vote to the other guy.

Thank you for your vote and enjoy the video!

The Meat Bracket Round 2: Vote for Bacon!!!

This entry is for Round 2 of the Meat Bracket being sponsored by The Carnivore Project. Bacon is going head to head with other meats to determine which meat is the best. Last week bacon dominated hot dogs. This week bacon is up against steak. So please vote for bacon!

Meat Bracket Round 2: Bacon vs Steak

I live in Washington, DC, which is arguably the steak eating capital of the world. More deals get done over steaks in this city than are done over any other type of meal, and you rarely have to walk more than a block to find a Prime Aged New York Strip. So there's no denying the power of steak.

But that's just it - in DC, steak is the meat associated with shady backroom deals and power hungry lobby interests. Outside of DC, steak may not be associated with such controversial images, but in the real world most people can only afford to eat truly good steak - the kind and quality of steak that is worthy of being named "the best meat ever" - on special occasions.

Bacon, on the other hand, is not only widely adored but it is also easily accessible. Almost anyone can afford good bacon and you can buy it almost anywhere that you can buy food. Bacon is relatively easy to cook and you can fit it into every meal of the day in an infinite number of ways. And even some vegetarians will tell you that bacon is the hardest meat to resist. Bacon and eggs, BLTs, bacon wrapped shrimp, bacon and beans, bacon cornbread, bacon bits, bacon dogs, bacon cheeseburgers...those are just a few reasons why bacon is "Everyman's Meat."

But bacon doesn't stop there. Bacon goes above and beyond the call of its duty as Everyman's Meat. Because despite steak's patrician status, even steak can be made better with bacon.

Blah.

BRILLIANT!

Steak is a meat of priviledge. Bacon is for everyone.

Here is another bacon video tribute for you to enjoy. Peace Love Bacon.

The Meat Bracket Round 1: VOTE FOR BACON!

I am participating in a meat competition sponsored by The Carnivore Project where bacon will go head to head with other meats to determine which meat is the best. Please check my website regularly and vote when the polls are up because it just wouldn't be right for bacon not to win. Could you sleep at night knowing bacon didn't win a "Best of Meat" competition because you didn't vote? Me either. So vote!

Meat Bracket Round 1: Hot Dog vs Bacon

The Hot Dog. It's a meat that is as American as apple pie.

The smell of a hot dog can bring back memories of watching a baseball game on a warm summer night, barbecuing at a pool party, or roasting weenies on a stick by the campfire.

And there are many things you can add to a hot dog to enhance your dining experience. Some people like to add mustard, ketchup, relish, onions or pickles, amongst other things.

Naturally, bacon is another one of those things that can make a hot dog better.

Why does bacon make everything better? Well it's because bacon is the candy of meats. The smell of frying bacon can drive the tastebuds of any carnivore crazy, even those who are compelled to resist its sweet temptation. It is an essential part of a good, hearty breakfast, and breakfast is afterall the most important meal of the day. It comes in many sizes and flavors, but no matter how you slice it there is no meat out there that unites the human race in the way that bacon does.

So if bacon can make a hot dog better, can a hot dog make bacon better? No, mostly because it's not really physically possible. But under most circumstances, bacon can definitely turn an otherwise dull hot dog into a culinary adventure. Following are a few examples of bacon making a hot dog better.

Exhibit A
First we have a bacon wrapped hot dog (although it came unwrapped while I was staging the photo - oops). Before adding the bacon, this hot dog would have been nice, but dull. But by adding the bacon, this is now a party in your mouth.

Exhibit B
Next we have a bacon corndog casserole. I've taken the concept of a corndog and turned it into a casserole that is easy enough for anyone to make, and the cornbread has been enhanced with the addition of bacon. This variation on a state fair favorite is now as fun as a ride on the world's largest rollercoaster.

Exhibit C

And last, to really kick things up a notch as Emeril would say, here is one of his own recipes - the BLT Hot Dog. Without the bacon, this is just a hot dog with some lettuce, tomato, mustard and mayonnaise on it - blah. Add bacon and it's good enough for Emeril's website.

In conclusion: I think it's fair to say that everything tastes better with bacon, including hot dogs.

Now sit back, relax and watch this video with some gratuitous shots of bacon that will demonstrate why it truly is the best meat ever. Enjoy.

Warning: There is some profanity in the song that goes with this video. Because for some people, their love of bacon is so intense that it takes an intense word like the f-bomb to properly convey their feelings.

The Meat Bracket

My January "Bacon of the Month" arrived this week. And this month's selection - Bear Creek Hickory bacon from East Texas - looks pretty darn tasty.

You'll be seeing some of it highlighted here on Bacon Unwrapped as I take part in the "Meat Bracket" tournament being sponsored by The Carnivore Project starting next week. Of the 32 meats entered in the tournament, there are actually 2 entries for bacon. Maybe there will be a bacon vs bacon final...it could be even more exciting than March Madness. Stay tuned!
